In World War II, aboard the aircraft carrier Saratoga, Captain Robert Beebe dreamed of one day retiring and cruising the world in a small boat. At that time world cruisers voyaged exclusively in sailboats. But sailboats are confined to narrow lanes of predominantly favorable winds - the same sea lanes sailors have used for centuries. Those famous tradewinds also turn most oceans into one-way streets, and miss some areas of the globe entirely. And sailing in the trades can be difficult and unpredictable, with dead calms or howling gales as likely as a steady 15-knot breeze. Beebe wanted to cross oceans in his slippers and robe, not seaboots and oilskins. He wanted to arrive at distant ports relaxed and on time, not grizzled, battered, and two months late. He wanted to voyage under power. Back in the 1940s, no suitable long-distance powerboats existed. Beebe literally had to invent modern powerboat voyaging from scratch. The design parameters he developed for long-distance powerboats are still in use by naval architects today. The resulting boat, Passagemaker, was home to the Beebes for many years and more than 60,000 ocean-crossing miles. What Beebe learned in those years of voyaging became, in 1974, Voyaging Under Power still the most important and influential book ever published on long-distance powerboating. Now, under the able pen of world cruiser Jim Leishman, Beebe's classic Voyaging Under Power has received its first complete overhaul. This thoroughly revised third edition is one of the most anxiously awaited boating books of the 1990s. The core of the book is vintage Beebe; his designs, his research, and his wonderful cruising stories remain intact.

New Transnational Social Spaces: International Migration and Transnational Companies in the Early Twenty-First Century by Ludger Pries, X
Everyday life and social structures increasingly span long distances and several places. Transnationalism has become one of the most important and relevant approaches at the beginning of the twenty-first century. This book focuses on new transnational social spaces; it conceptualizes the new relation between the Social and the Spatial which has emerged with the new communication and transportation technologies, alongside the massive transnational movement of people. Terms such as globalization, virtual reality, cyberspace, or tele-management indicate that the reciprocal exclusivity of geographic and social space is changing in two ways: first, different social spaces with no previous geographic overlap or relationship to one another can become "stacked" within one and the same geographic space; second, one social space can now expand over several geographic spaces. Transnational social spaces are pluri-local, durable and dense configurations of social practices, systems of symbols and artifacts that span places in different countries. This important cutting-edge volume brings together completely up-to-date theoretical and empirical research, focussing on international migration and international business. It presents significant social and political challenges for social scientists -- in international relations or business; sociologists, anthropologists and geographers -- as well as for politicians, professionals and practitioners.
